Manage taxes with Square and Toast POS
If you use Square or Toast point-of-sale (POS) systems, your tax settings sync automatically. While you can manage core tax settings directly within your POS system, you can always use the Taxes page in the merchant portal to configure advanced, location-specific, or item-specific rules.
Create and manage taxes in the Merchant Portal
You can create, update, and organize local taxes directly within the merchant portal. Taxes can be assigned broadly by location or specified at the category and item level for more granular control.
Create a tax
Go to Menu > Taxes.
Select Create a tax.
Enter a name and a percentage-based tax rate for the new tax.
Select Apply changes to save the tax to your portal.
Manage taxes by location
On the Taxes page, select the specific tax you want to update.
Select Edit location taxes.
Select the checkboxes for the locations where this tax applies.
Select Save.
Select Apply changes.
Configure taxes by category or item
From the tax configuration screen, select the Category item tab.
Select Edit category item tax.
Optional: Use the Locations, Categories, or Items filters to quickly find specific groups.
-
Apply the tax using one of the following methods:
All locations: To apply the tax to everything globally, select the top Categories and items checkbox. To exempt an entire category (such as breakfast sandwiches) or a specific item (such as cookies), clear its respective checkbox.
Specific locations: Scroll to the broken-down location sections. Select the top checkbox for a location to tax all of its contents, or expand a category to select individual items (such as oatmeal).
Select Save.
Select Apply changes to finalize your tax rules.
Note: Item-level settings take priority over category and location configurations. If an individual item is marked as tax-exempt, the Merchant Portal will not apply the location tax to that item.
